The desert definitely helped shape his way of seeing light and color. I was raised on the Smurfs, Snorks, Thundercats and He-Man cartoons.I think that this Images is for a fine art purpose more than an editorial purpose. This is because i think the image has been created primarily for aesthetic purposes as the the image does not seem to have much technical editing done to it. Also due to the subject i feel that the image is supposed to get across the beauty linking with life and death.
The image that i have chosen from the artist is of a rose which is going through decomposition as the rose is dying.
I have chosen this image as I feel that it conveys beauty of a flower as it starts to die. This stood out to me as usually you would link beauty with youth such as when the flowers have just blossomed and not when the flowers are dying.
Billy uses the flowers that are halfway between life and death to make the audience think about the beauty liked with youth, as billy says “I feel we need to reevaluate how we link youth with beauty.
As a flower dries and decays, the multitude of veins running throughout the petals and leaves begin to emerge in stark contrast to the body of the flower”. He does this by capturing a ver specific moment in the flowers lifespan, we know this as billy sets up a camera pointed at the flower for days infant of a window waiting for it to sit just right.
Billy says “ I’m trying to capture these flowers at the right moment in between life and death. Too early and it’s just a pretty picture of a flower, too late and you’ve lost the flower’s character”. I feel that the main message that Billy is trying to coney is that he wants us to rethink what we class as beauty and perfects.
I think he proves this as he says “Imperfection is defined as an undesirable feature.

I like how these photographs have a black background, and you cannot see the whole flower, you can only see a part of it.Yet the undesirable feature may be the thing that another finds beautiful. So in a sense beauty can not be defined but can only be what that person believes beauty to be”.
I think that the main technical element in this image is the negative space and the strong colours. This is because the colours bring out the character within the image as it shows the beauty of the flower although it is decaying.
Then I feel that the negative space in the image pulls the viewers attention into the centre which is where the rose it.

I think that this image if places in a gallery or a magazine would have a huge impact. This is because if the image was bigger such as a full page you would be able to fully appreciate the beauty of the flower as it decays. However although this image is a strong individual it is also part of an exhibition which has multiple other images of decaying flowers and also of nude bodies.

When I was six years old we sold everything in a garage.So i feel that in the gallery with the other images from exhibition I feel that this image would stand out the most.
While looking through Billy Kidd’s images closely and evaluating this image in particular I think that it would inspire my work in many ways. Firstly I want my images to also convey beauty with flowers that have started to decay in a way as such that Billy Kidd has done so with his images.
Also I want the negative space in my image to pull the viewers attention into the centre of the image so the flower in the images will stand out. When I edit the images I would try to purely represent the beauty of the flowers and not go too technical with the edits, this is because I want people to appreciate the ascetic aspects of the image and not just the editing.
